Overview

Lunar Landers is loosely based on 1969 'Lunar Lander', it's retro graphics, and the challenge of delicately landing a ship on rugged terrain.

The twist is that this is that Lunar Landers is online multiplayer, and focuses on landing at 'mines' around the landscape - dropping off crews to mine gold, and then bringing that gold back up to the mothership.

The first player to reach 1000 gold deposited into their mothership wins!

But, gold can be used for other purposes - you can repair your ship, or add new cabins/crews.  Adding a new Cabin/Crew comes with perks - some crews while on board (and not actively mining) will increase your Thrusters, or Durability, or Fuel; The Mining crew will improve your mining efficiency.

Instructions:

  • WASD - Moves the player's ship, click the UI for all other actions

  • Mines are indicated on the map by green circles, and small landing pads.

  • Once you land at a mine -  click on a Cabin and then click "Drop Off Crew".

  • Once the Crew is done mining - click on a grey (empty) Cabin and click "Pickup Crew"

  • Once you are back at the mothership (rectangle same color as you) - click on a Cabin that has mined gold, and click Deposit Crew Gold

  • With Gold in your Mothership and when you are Docked at your Mothership- you can now Repair your ship (click repair button next to red health bar) or you can click Buy a Cabin (on the right hand side of screen)

Disclaimers:

  • This Project is Buggy - 'Dune' Buggy kinda buggy, Starship Troopers final battle scene kinda buggy, Disney's Bugs Buggy. That said - I'm super open for folks to Comment on any bugs found, and I'll see what I can do to address them

  • This Project isn't Complete - There was a grand vision, of upgrades, and deep mines, and races.  I'm happy with where the game is at, and have a commitment to not let games die (only exist) on my hard drive. So here it is!

This is pretty neat! I only tried it solo but I like that this gives the old lunar game more of a purpose (cabins, gold collection) but retains the same difficulty.

Wow, I didn't think anyone would stumble into this! Yeah, it's also multiplayer, and kinda fun to compete. As you add in Cabin members, they all have specialties. That affect your ship. I never quite worked out the "hook" for this game to keep folks coming back!

I played it since I want to work on a Lunar Lander clone myself for a practice project, so I might steal some ideas if that's okay haha :)

But yeah, anything multiplayer is harder to get traction I'd guess.

Either way, well done for a neat little project!

Cool. Yeah I checked our a lot of itch Lunar Lander games first too. I liked the retro green vibe. In the original lunar lander the screen zooms in once you get close to the land. I found that challenging to implement (it kept popping back and forth and was quite sensitive. Otherwise. A fun game to make!
